Northwest Natural Environment Index 2007

Following on from a pilot study in Lancashire (see the “Natural Economy” page), the Northwest Natural Environment Index (NEI) was developed to provide a geographical representation of where socio-economic deprivation and environmental value exist, and any correlation between these issues. The analysis of correlations will aid future environmental intervention choices in order to maximise the socio-economic return on investment, and will also guide socio-economic intervention choices to maximise benefit from and for the environment.

The Natural Environment Index is based on Lower Super Output Area (LSOA) geographical boundaries. NEI data is available for download as an Excel spreadsheet from this page – this can be linked using GIS to digital boundaries which are available from the Office for National Statistics.

The Natural Environment Index was developed by TEP for Natural Economy Northwest in partnership with Natural England, Forestry Commission, Environment Agency and Northwest Development Agency.
